Chapter 5: Of Providence

As for those wicked and ungodly men whom God, as a righteous Judge, for former sins, doth blind and harden,¹ from them he not only withholdeth his grace whereby they might have been enlightened in their understandings, and wrought upon in their hearts;² but sometimes also withdraweth the gifts which they had,³ and exposeth them to such objects as their corruption makes occasions of sin;⁴ and, withal, gives them over to their own lusts, the temptations of the world, and the power of Satan,⁵ whereby it comes to pass that they harden themselves, even under those means which God useth for the softening of others.⁶

Romans 1:24

Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves,

Romans 1:26

For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature;

Romans 1:28

And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.

Romans 11:7-8

What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened, as it is written,

“God gave them a spirit of stupor,
eyes that would not see
and ears that would not hear,

Psalm 81:11-12

Exodus 7:3

2 Corinthians 2:15-16

Isaiah 8:14

1 Peter 2:7-8

So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,

“The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone,”

and

“A stone of stumbling,
and a rock of offense.”

They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

Isaiah 6:9-10

And he said, “Go, and say to this people:

“‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand;
keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’
Make the heart of this people dull,
and their ears heavy,
and blind their eyes;
lest they see with their eyes,
and hear with their ears,
and understand with their hearts,
and turn and be healed.”

Acts 28:26-27

“‘Go to this people, and say,
You will indeed hear but never understand,
and you will indeed see but never perceive.
For this people’s heart has grown dull,
and with their ears they can barely hear,
and their eyes they have closed;
lest they should see with their eyes
and hear with their ears
and understand with their heart
and turn, and I would heal them.’ (ESV)
