A. The sixth commandment forbiddeth the taking away of our own life, or the life of our neighbor unjustly, or whatsoever tendeth thereunto.1

Q 136. What are the sins forbidden in the sixth commandment?

A. The sins forbidden in the sixth commandment are, all taking away the life of ourselves,2 or of others,3 except in case of public justice,4 lawful war,5 or necessary defense;6 the neglecting or withdrawing the lawful and necessary means of preservation of life;7 sinful anger,8 hatred,9 envy,10 desire of revenge;11 all excessive passions,12 distracting cares;13 immoderate use of meat, drink,14 labor,15 and recreations;16 provoking words,17 oppression,18 quarreling,19 striking, wounding,20 and whatsoever else tends to the destruction of the life of any.21
