A. The sins forbidden in the sixth commandment are, all taking away the life of ourselves,² or of others,³ except in case of public justice,⁴ lawful war,⁵ or necessary defense;⁶ the neglecting or withdrawing the lawful and necessary means of preservation of life;⁷ sinful anger,⁸ hatred,⁹ envy,¹⁰ desire of revenge;¹¹ all excessive passions,¹² distracting cares;¹³ immoderate use of meat, drink,¹⁴ labor,¹⁵ and recreations;¹⁶ provoking words,¹⁷ oppression,¹⁸ quarreling,¹⁹ striking, wounding,²⁰ and whatsoever else tends to the destruction of the life of any.²¹
