Chapter 21: Of Religious Worship, and the Sabbath Day

The reading of the Scriptures with godly fear,¹ the sound preaching² and conscionable hearing of the Word, in obedience unto God, with understanding, faith, and reverence,³ singing of psalms with grace in the heart;⁴ as also, the due administration and worthy receiving of the sacraments instituted by Christ, are all parts of the ordinary religious worship of God:⁵ beside religious oaths,⁶ vows,⁷ solemn fastings,⁸ and thanksgivings upon special occasions,⁹ which are, in their several times and seasons, to be used in an holy and religious manner.¹⁰

Acts 15:21

For from ancient generations Moses has had in every city those who proclaim him, for he is read every Sabbath in the synagogues.”

Isaiah 19:21

Psalm 107

107:1 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever!

Some wandered in desert wastes,
finding no way to a city to dwell in;

they saw the deeds of the Lord,

their courage melted away in their evil plight;

He made the storm be still,

Then they were glad that the waters were quiet,

Let them extol him in the congregation of the people,
and praise him in the assembly of the elders.

He turns rivers into a desert,
springs of water into thirsty ground,
a fruitful land into a salty waste,
because of the evil of its inhabitants.
He turns a desert into pools of water,
a parched land into springs of water.
And there he lets the hungry dwell,
and they establish a city to live in;
they sow fields and plant vineyards
and get a fruitful yield.
By his blessing they multiply greatly,
and he does not let their livestock diminish.

When they are diminished and brought low
through oppression, evil, and sorrow,
he pours contempt on princes
and makes them wander in trackless wastes;
but he raises up the needy out of affliction
and makes their families like flocks.
The upright see it and are glad,
and all wickedness shuts its mouth.

Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things;
let them consider the steadfast love of the Lord.

Esther 9:22

as the days on which the Jews got relief from their enemies, and as the month that had been turned for them from sorrow into gladness and from mourning into a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, days for sending gifts of food to one another and gifts to the poor.
